Pet Screens
While pet screens double as insect screens, only one will stop your pets from getting out. If you plan to pet-proof your windows, you will need to understand what makes pet mesh and pet screens different from insect screens.
What is pet mesh?
All the screens in our flyscreen supreme range (apart from the roller screens) are available in pet mesh. We recommend pet mesh to clients who want to stop their pets from leaving the house but keep their windows open.
Compared to flyscreen mesh, pet mesh is robust and resists clawing and scratching whereas insect mesh is no match for a determined dog or cat who wants to get out.
Our pet mesh consists of woven strands of stainless steel and is powder coated. The frames are made from high-grade aluminium. The mesh is intricately woven so it stops flies, mosquitos and other pests such as dogs, cats, monkeys, birds, snakes, spiders and lizards from getting into your home. And it will not obstruct your view.
The distinct types of pet screens
Pet mesh is available with these applications:
A sash screen consists of two panels; one fixed and another that slides up and down. The pet mesh stretches taut across both panels. Together with the frame, they create a seal in front of the opening.
Sash screens are only suitable for windows, not doors. And while they are best for steel windows, you can install them on wooden and aluminium windows, The sash-screen operates either up and down or left to right. How the screen opens depends on the location of the window handle.
In this application, we stretch the mesh across a rigid aluminium frame. Bullet hinges fix one side of the screen to your window or door allowing the screen door to swing into the room. When it closes, a magnetic lock secures the screen to your window frame.
This application is suitable for both doors and windows. Extra mid-rails give extra stability to the frames of solid-hinged door screens.
To make a solid slider pet screen, we stretch the pet mesh over an aluminium frame, But, like the sliding glass door, it runs on patio rollers in a track fixed to the floor. The design is suitable for both doors and windows.
Security Screens
Mesh security Screens
Please note, petscreens are not ‘baboon-proof’. They are applicable when trying to keep insects out and domestic animals in or out. Where a ‘baboon-proof’ application is required, the only option is security screens and it must be stressed that even then, baboons are known to be incredibly destructive , so although a deterrent, we cannot guarantee that a baboon will not be able to get through a security screen.

Fly screens are mesh barriers fitted over windows and doors to keep insects like flies, mosquitoes, and other pests out, while still allowing fresh air to flow into a building.
Typically made from materials such as fibreglass, aluminium, or stainless steel, they are a simple yet highly effective solution for improving comfort and hygiene in both homes and businesses.
In South Africa, where warm weather and outdoor living are part of daily life, flies and other insects are a persistent issue. Households often battle with fruit flies in kitchens, mosquitoes in bedrooms, and flying pests around braais and patios.
In commercial settings such as restaurants, food processing facilities, and lodges, the presence of flies can pose serious health risks, impact customer experience, and compromise hygiene standards.
Given South Africa’s generally warm climate, long summers, and frequent opening of windows and doors for ventilation, fly screens have become increasingly important. They allow for natural airflow without the worry of insect intrusion, making them particularly useful in rural areas, farming communities, coastal towns, and game lodges.
With fly-borne diseases such as malaria present in parts of the country, installing fly screens is not only a matter of convenience but also a proactive health measure.
Installing fly screens offers a range of practical benefits, particularly well-suited to the South African climate and lifestyle. One of the primary advantages is their ability to keep out flies, mosquitoes, moths, and other pests that often invade homes and commercial spaces.
This is especially important in areas prone to insect-borne diseases such as malaria or where pest presence affects food hygiene and comfort.
Fly screens also allow for continuous, natural airflow without the need to open windows wide and risk insect intrusion. This means South Africans can enjoy cooling breezes during the hot summer months while maintaining a protective barrier between their indoor spaces and the outside environment.
In many designs, especially those using strong aluminium or stainless steel mesh, airflow is preserved without compromising on security, an important consideration in higher-crime areas.
Another benefit is the reduction in reliance on chemical insect repellents and sprays, which can be expensive and potentially harmful with prolonged use. By acting as a physical deterrent, fly screens offer a non-toxic and environmentally friendly alternative for pest control.
Modern fly screens are also available in pet- and child-friendly formats, designed to resist scratching or pushing without tearing or detaching easily. This makes them an excellent option for family homes, contributing to a more comfortable, breathable indoor space.
Choosing the right material for your fly screens is essential to make sure they withstand South Africa’s diverse and sometimes harsh environmental conditions. From intense sun exposure to salty coastal air and the need for added security, certain mesh materials perform better depending on your region and specific requirements.
UV-resistant mesh is ideal for homes in sunny inland regions, such as Gauteng, Limpopo, and the Free State. Prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight can cause standard mesh materials to degrade and fade over time. UV-stabilised fibreglass or polyester mesh helps maintain durability and appearance, resisting brittleness and discolouration in areas with strong year-round sunlight.
For coastal homes, corrosion-resistant mesh is a must. Sea air carries salt particles that can corrode standard metal meshes, leading to rust and shortened lifespans. In these environments, aluminium mesh with a protective coating or marine-grade stainless steel is a smart choice.
These materials offer excellent resistance to rust and wear, making them particularly suitable for coastal cities like Durban, Cape Town, and Port Elizabeth.
In high-crime areas, security is a major concern, and fly screens can do double duty. Heavy-duty stainless steel mesh, often referred to as security mesh, provides a strong barrier that not only keeps insects out but also deters forced entry through windows.
This type of mesh is tightly woven, impact-resistant, and installed within reinforced frames, offering both ventilation and peace of mind.
Selecting the right fly screen material tailored to your local climate and safety needs offers long-lasting protection and comfort throughout the year.
Fly screens have become increasingly popular in a wide range of settings across South Africa, thanks to their versatility and practicality in addressing both insect control and ventilation needs. From suburban homes to safari lodges, their applications span across lifestyle, location, and industry.
In residential homes, fly screens are commonly installed on bedroom, kitchen, and living room windows to allow safe ventilation while keeping out mosquitoes, flies, and other pests. With many South African households favouring open windows during the hot summer months, fly screens are an essential addition for both hygiene and comfort.
Game lodges and farmhouses benefit significantly from fly screens, especially in remote or bushveld areas where insect activity is high. Whether it’s for guest cottages or main lodges, these screens protect against biting insects like mosquitoes and stable flies without disrupting the natural experience of staying close to nature.
For farmhouses, fly screens are also practical for food storage areas and sleeping quarters, offering peace of mind during hot evenings.
Coastal properties face a unique challenge with salty sea air and an abundance of small flying insects. Here, corrosion-resistant fly screens provide protection against rust and offer year-round insect control, making them a must for beachfront homes and sea-facing apartments.
In flats and high-rise buildings, fly screens are a smart solution for allowing fresh air into smaller living spaces while maintaining security. Many modern designs, such as sliding screens, suit sliding windows and balcony doors without altering the structure of the building.
Finally, commercial kitchens and hospitality venues across South Africa, from cafes and restaurants to guesthouses, rely on fly screens to meet health regulations and add to guest satisfaction. Insects near food preparation or dining areas are a serious hygiene concern, and fly screens offer a reliable, non-chemical solution to maintaining cleanliness and comfort.

What types of fly screens are best for South African homes?
The most popular types include fixed frame screens, rollscreens or retractable screens, and security mesh screens. The choice depends on your window type, region (e.g., coastal or inland), and whether you need added security or pet-friendly durability.
Can fly screens be customised to fit any window size or shape?
Yes, most fly screen providers in South Africa offer custom sizing and frames to fit any type of window, including arched, sliding, or casement styles. Custom options ensure a snug, effective fit and maintain the aesthetic of your home.
Are fly screens effective against mosquitoes and small insects?
Quality fly screens are designed with a fine mesh that prevents even the smallest insects, like midges and mosquitoes, from entering while still allowing fresh air to circulate.
Do I need professional installation, or can I fit them myself?
Both options are available. DIY kits are suited for standard windows and are budget-friendly, while professional installation is recommended for large or irregular windows, sliding doors, and security screens.
How long do fly screens last in the South African climate?
With proper care, quality fly screens can last 5–10 years or longer. UV-resistant and corrosion-proof materials are particularly important for extending durability in sunny or coastal areas.
