Flyscreen prices in South Africa typically range from R600 to R4,000+ per unit depending on size, type, and installation requirements. Windows cost between R600-R2,600, while doors range from R1,500-R4,000. Installation adds R300-R800 per unit.

What Are Flyscreens?

Flyscreens are custom-fitted mesh screens installed on windows or doors to prevent insects from entering your home while maintaining airflow and ventilation. They’re designed to form a permanent part of your existing window or door frame, providing year-round protection from mosquitoes, flies, wasps and other unwanted insects without compromising natural ventilation or the aesthetic appeal of your home.

Flyscreen prices depend on several factors: Is it for a door or window? What’s the size of the opening? What type of application: rollerscreen, sash-type, hinged or sliding? Ordinary insect mesh or pet mesh? This guide breaks down real flyscreen costs in South Africa, what affects pricing, and how to choose the right solution for your home.

Factors That Affect Flyscreen Cost

Understanding what drives pricing helps you budget accurately and choose the right solution.

Window or Door Material

Wood, steel and aluminium are the three most common materials used to make windows and doors. We need to know your material type because some flyscreen applications are better suited to certain windows. For example, our Sash-Type screens are best suited to steel-framed windows. Aluminium and steel frames typically accommodate screens more easily than wooden frames, which may require additional customization and increase costs by approximately R150-R400.

Size of Opening

Size is the biggest cost driver. Larger windows and doors require more mesh material and aluminium framing, directly increasing the price. Custom sizing is essential – what looks like a “standard size” often isn’t. There are hundreds of combinations of widths and lengths with windows, and windows come in many styles: top-hung, side-hung, sliding or even sash-type.

Doors also vary: hinged, sliding or stacking.

As a general rule, large sliding doors can increase the base flyscreen price by 30-60% compared to standard window screens due to the extended mesh area required.

Existing Obstacles

Our insect screens attach to your window or frame to create an airtight seal. Without it, insects could slip through gaps, defeating the purpose of the screen.

Do you have burglar bars or security gates? We can work around these barriers, but it usually requires extra material to create a frame we can attach the screen to. This adds approximately R200-R600 to your final cost, depending on complexity.

Do you have blinds? We’ll charge you a fee for repositioning them to accommodate the screen, typically R150-R300 per window.

Does your opening have plaster or tiles? Tiles affect the measurements of your opening. For example, a bathroom window might only have tiles halfway up the recess. As a result, the width will be different at the top compared to the bottom of the opening. Our sales reps measure each window precisely before manufacturing.

Recess Depth

The ‘recess’ refers to the depth of space between the front of the wall and the window or door. Our screens form part of your existing openings, but each application requires a certain amount of recess space.

For example, our Rollerscreen Flyscreens have a cassette (tube) that holds the mesh when it’s rolled up. The cassette measures 45 mm in diameter, so the recess must be at least 45 mm deep to fit. If you don’t have enough recess depth, we can attach the screen to the wall in front of the window (called a face-fix). This requires more material and increases the total cost by approximately R300-R700 per unit.

Frame Colour and Finish

All our screens feature powder-coated aluminium frames designed to match your window or door frames, making them less noticeable. Our standard powder-coating colours are white, cream, beige, bronze, charcoal or black. Custom colours are available but come with a surcharge of approximately R150-R250 per unit.

Types of Flyscreens and Pricing

Sash-Type Flyscreens

A sash-type screen consists of two panels of mesh within an aluminium frame. One panel is stationary while the other moves up and down or left to right. Sash-type insect screens are only suitable for windows, not doors.

Price Range: R600 – R1,600 (excl. VAT & Installation)

Best for: Traditional sash windows and steel-framed windows

Advantages: Low cost, clean aesthetic, minimal recess space required

Rollerscreen Flyscreens

Like a roller blind, the insect mesh in a Rollerscreen Flyscreen rolls up into a tube when not in use. This application is suitable for both doors and windows, making it the most versatile option for most home types. Our rollerscreen systems are popular because they combine functionality with aesthetic appeal.

Rollerscreen Window: R900 – R1,800 (excl. VAT & Installation)

Rollerscreen Door: R1,500 – R2,300 (excl. VAT & Installation)

Best for: Doors, windows, and homes where you want the screen hidden when not in use

Advantages: Compact storage, easy operation, works on both doors and windows, smooth rolling mechanism

Solid-Hinged Screens

Solid-hinged insect screens consist of an aluminium frame with mesh stretched across it. They attach to the window or door frame on a hinge. To access your window handle, you open the screen by pulling it towards you. Once the window is open, the screen shuts over the window. A magnetic lock keeps the screen in place.

Lightweight Solid-Hinged Window: R900 – R1,900 (excl. VAT & Installation)

Lightweight Solid-Hinged Door: R2,200 – R4,000 (excl. VAT & Installation)

Best for: Windows and doors where you want permanent access to the screen

Advantages: Sturdy construction, always accessible, durable magnetic locks, excellent for high-traffic areas

Solid-Slider Screen

Our sliding screens complement sliding doors and windows perfectly. You can install the screen inside or outside of the existing frame, depending on your preference and recess depth. These are ideal for modern homes with contemporary sliding door systems.

Solid Slider Window: R1,400 – R2,600 (excl. VAT & Installation)

Solid Slider Door: R1,900 – R3,200 (excl. VAT & Installation)

Best for: Sliding patio doors and sliding windows

Advantages: Smooth operation, aesthetic appeal, suitable for modern homes, easy to operate.

Are Flyscreens Worth the Cost?

Yes. A custom-made flyscreen is an investment in your home’s comfort, health and functionality. Quality flyscreens:

  • Maintain year-round ventilation without insect intrusion
  • Reduce reliance on chemical insect repellents and sprays
  • Improve indoor air quality by allowing fresh air circulation
  • Are designed to last 20+ years with minimal maintenance
  • Add to your home’s appeal and perceived value
  • Allow you to open windows safely at any time of day

According to South African building standards for window ventilation and indoor air quality, proper ventilation is essential for healthy homes. Flyscreens allow you to meet ventilation requirements without compromising insect protection. This is especially valuable in coastal areas and regions with high mosquito and insect pressure.

You don’t need to buy insect screens for all your windows at once. Let our consultants help you find a cost-effective way to insect-proof your home, prioritizing high-traffic areas like kitchens and bedrooms first.

Are Flyscreens Worth the Cost

Frequently Asked Questions About Flyscreen Pricing

What is the cheapest flyscreen option in South Africa?

Sash-type window screens are the most affordable, starting at R600. Rollerscreen windows begin at R900. If budget is your priority, starting with kitchen and bedroom windows using sash-type screens is a cost-effective approach.

How much does a flyscreen cost for sliding doors?

Sliding door flyscreens (Solid-Slider) range from R1,900-R3,200 depending on size. Rollerscreen doors are slightly cheaper at R1,500-R2,300. Larger patio doors may cost toward the higher end of the range.

Do flyscreens reduce airflow?

No. Flyscreens are designed to maintain airflow while blocking insects. The mesh allows air to pass through freely, so you maintain natural ventilation. You can control airflow by adjusting hinged louvres on some models or rolling up rollscreen systems entirely.

What affects flyscreen pricing the most?

Size is the biggest factor, followed by application type (window vs door), material type (wood, steel, aluminium), and any obstacles like burglar bars or existing blinds. Burglar bars typically add R200-R600 to the final cost.

Are flyscreens worth the investment?

Yes. They improve comfort, maintain ventilation, reduce insect exposure, and last 20+ years. Unlike temporary solutions like spray repellents or chemical treatments, flyscreens provide permanent, chemical-free insect protection. The cost amortizes over decades of use.

Can I install a flyscreen myself?

Professional installation is recommended. Precise measurements and proper fitting are critical for the screen to seal effectively and function properly. Our sales reps measure on-site and install professionally, ensuring your screens work as intended. DIY installation risks gaps that allow insect entry.

How long do flyscreens last?

Quality custom-made flyscreens are designed to last 20+ years with minimal maintenance. Powder-coated aluminium frames resist corrosion and UV damage, and the mesh can be replaced if needed. In coastal areas, marine-grade components ensure longevity even in harsh conditions.

Can I get a flyscreen in a custom colour?

Yes. Our standard colours are white, cream, beige, bronze, charcoal and black. Custom colours are available at a surcharge of approximately R150-R250 per unit. Contact us for specific colour options and pricing.

Do flyscreens require maintenance?

Minimal. Regular dusting removes debris, and occasional cleaning with mild soap and water keeps them looking new. Hinges and locks should be inspected annually. The mesh can be vacuumed or gently cleaned with a soft brush.

Can security flyscreens block pollen?

Security flyscreens and our premium pet mesh screens have finer mesh that blocks more pollen than standard insect mesh. If you have allergies, ask about high-filtration mesh options when requesting your quote.
