White shutters are a year-round classic. But they’re even more impressive in a sweltering South African summer. So if you’re thinking of renovating your home or upgrading your window treatments for summer, here’s why they should be part of your plan.
Why choose white?
White shutters are iconic, but there are practical reasons for choosing them too. You might be tempted to match your shutters to your window frames, but in most cases, we recommend sticking with white.
- White shutters are versatile
Like a blank canvas, white shutters give you the freedom to experiment with your personal style.
It doesn’t matter if you prefer bold colours, earthy tones or barely-there neutrals. White shutters never look out of place. And you can combine them with sheer or heavy curtains for a softer or more dramatic feel.
Even if you change your decor style from one season to the next, you’ll never have to change your window treatment.
- White shutters are energy-efficient
It’s true. Shutters insulate your home in winter. And in summer, they reflect heat away from your windows. Reduce your reliance on power-hungry appliances. Install shutters to regulate your home’s temperature instead.
Shutters, like all window treatments, let you control light, airflow and privacy. You can direct light, heat and air where you want it when you want it by adjusting the louvres.
- White shutters create space
It’s an optical illusion, but white shutters can make a room feel bigger and brighter. White reflects light which explains the effect, especially in smaller rooms.
Are They Hard to Keep Clean?
Worried your shutters will show up dirt or turn yellow from sun exposure? You needn’t. Both wood and aluminium shutters will keep their bright, clean aesthetic if you take care of them.
Primed and painted with specialist paint, our wooden shutters won’t crack, peel or discolour. Over time, the colour may fade a little. But with regular maintenance, this won’t be an issue.
Our aluminium shutters are powder-coated with marine-grade powder. This finish protects it from UV rays so your shutters will always look as good as the day we installed them.
Clean & Bright: White Kitchen Shutters
Families love gathering in a clean, bright kitchen to cook, eat or simply spend time together.
Our decorative aluminium shutters are well-adapted to withstand steamy, damp and wet conditions. Plus they add a practical elegance to what is a functional space.
Privacy & Luxury: White Bathroom Shutters
The bathroom is another space where aluminium shutters add both function and style. They provide complete privacy for those moments when you want to escape. And they’re steam- and splash resistant.
Recreate the atmosphere of your favourite spa by adding shutters. Add scented candles, put out fluffy towels, and add an extra dash of bubble bath – instant bliss.
Rest & Relaxation: White Bedroom Shutters
Shutters transform a bedroom into a sanctuary. The adjustable louvres give you complete control over light and airflow. So you can create the ideal atmosphere for a peaceful night’s sleep.
Another benefit of installing shutters in the bedroom is noise reduction. Adding a barrier between your room and the window reduces the ambient noise. Less noise will make it easier for you to fall asleep.
Indoor & Outdoor: White Patio Shutters
Enclosing your patio with either decorative aluminium or security shutters is smart.
First, with a cool space to retreat to, you’ll make more use of your patio in the summer. And in winter, you’ll have a sheltered area where you can bask in the sun and avoid the icy wind. That alone is priceless.
Second, it’s like adding an extra room to your home. Now you have extra space for entertaining guests or another place for the kids to play. Shutters will protect your outdoor furniture, so you don’t have to store it away when you’re not using it.
And third, shutters (white or otherwise) add real value to your home by increasing its market value. Your home also becomes more attractive to potential buyers.
Of all the window treatments you have to choose from, white shutters might seem rather plain. But they are versatile and practical yet sophisticated and elegant. A bit like the iconic little black dress of the fashion world.

Sliding Screen Door: For Your Coolest Summer Ever
The swish of a sliding screen door is synonymous with summer. There’s no better way to beat the heat and keep bugs at bay.
And best of all, it’ll keep your home cool during load shedding without you having to turn on the air conditioner.
If you have any questions about our solid sliders, you might find the answer here. So take a moment to read this article before you contact us to order sliding screens for your home.
Patio Doors & Sliding Screens: The Perfect Pair
Where do you install a sliding screen?
The most obvious place is in front of your sliding or stacking patio door. You can open your patio door on hot summer evenings for cool air while the screen keeps creepy crawlies out.
How does it slide?
It’s simple. The screen consists of PVC-coated fibreglass mesh inside an aluminium frame. It comes with headrails and a bottom track. The frame runs on patio door rollers (wheels) in a bottom track.
If necessary, we’ll add a mid-rail to the design to make the screen more stable.
Can you install a sliding screen on the outside of your door?
Yes, you can install the screen on the inside or the outside. And you needn’t worry if the elements will damage it.
And a powder coating protects the mesh from the hot sun.
What about double-sliding patio doors?
If you have a patio door with two sliding panels, you’ll need two sliding screens to cover the opening. These might have to meet in the middle or stack to the side.
No matter how many sliding panels your patio door has, we’ll design a configuration that works for you.
Does the screen door lock?
No, but we can offer a locking system. But we can add a male/female interlock on a double-panelled screen for you.
Remember, our insect screens are not designed for security. It’s quite easy to cut through the soft, fibreglass mesh, so adding a lock provides no protection at all.
If you’re looking for a screen that keeps large and small pests out, we do have a security mesh screen. It uses a 0.9 mm thick black powder-coated stainless-steel mesh. Mesh is fine enough to keep stop insects and tough enough to resist break-in attempts.
Will a sliding insect screen prevent pets from getting out?
It can, but we’d recommend a Pet Screen Sliding Door. The only difference between the two is the type of mesh used.
Pet Mesh is made from powder coated 304 stainless steel mesh. It’s claw and scratch-resistant so your pets won’t be able to make an escape hole in the mesh. If you’re looking to pet-proof your home, look at our pet screens for windows and doors.
Can I install the screen myself?
Yes, you can install your own sliding insect screen if you have some basic tools and a little DIY experience. But it is vital that you give us the correct measurements for manufacturing.
And that’s why we recommend that you let our trained team of installers carry out the installation. You’ll save time and hassle and our installers can sort out any hiccups on-site if necessary.
Can your repair or service a sliding screen?
You should have your screens serviced every year to avoid invalidating your warranty. But it’s also the best way to ensure your screen doors provide you with years of perfect service.
And should the mesh tear, the screens can be re-meshed on-site or brought to your nearest branch.
What is the warranty on a sliding screen door?
Our insect screens carry a 5-year warranty for workmanship and material defects. This includes assembly, manufacturing and installation faults, but not fair wear and tear. And we don’t offer a warranty on the mesh.
How do I measure my patio door for a quote?
If you’re looking for a screen door quote, send us these measurements, width x height in mm. If you place an order, one of our sales reps will come out to take final measurements before it’s put into production.
Here are the measurements you need to take:

Bedroom Shutters: A Dream Come True
Dreaming of bedroom shutters? That’s not uncommon. After all, white shutters elevate any room – especially bedrooms.
They are an investment window treatment. So if you need some concrete evidence to persuade your significant other, we’re here to help.
Shutters make an ordinary bedroom feel like the grandest suite in an expensive hotel. And they’re practical. Here’s why shutters make sense in your main bedroom, guest bedroom and even your kid’s bedroom.
Light, Air & Privacy
It’s easy to forget that shutters are a window treatment. Like curtains and blinds, they allow you to control the amount of light entering a room. In fact, shutters can block out a significant amount of light. This could appeal to you if you’re one of many people who sleep better in a dark room.
The louvres allow you to take control of the airflow in a room when the windows are open. And you can adjust them for more or less privacy by tilting them with your hand.
Comfort & Quiet
Did you know that around 18% – 30% of heat escapes through the windows of your home? Installing shutters creates a barrier and insulates your home. With shutters, you won’t have to rely on power-hungry appliances to heat or cool your home. It’s also easier to fall asleep if your bedroom is at an even temperature.
The same is true for noise pollution. Shutters dampen outside noises that might bother you and disturb your sleep. Heavy curtains and blinds have the same effect. But shutters add extra style and luxury, especially in a bedroom.
Ease Allergies & Cut Down on Housework
Shutters are easy to clean. Wipe them down with a damp or dry cloth or run the brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner over them.
And that’s great news for those who suffer from allergies. Unlike fabric window treatments, shutters don’t trap dust and pollen. For this reason alone, you might want to install shutters in every room in your home, not only your bedroom.
Sound Asleep
Security shutters go one step further than decorative aluminium shutters. Extra security features make them a stylish alternative to traditional burglar bars.
Securing your property at night when you’re most vulnerable, is especially important. Particularly if you own a free-standing home. But you’ll sleep soundly if you invest in security shutters for your bedroom.
Security shutters protect your family and your possessions. And they add value to your property. Should you want to sell, they make your home more appealing to prospective buyers.
Our security shutters are as elegant and attractive as our decorative aluminium shutters. So you needn’t worry that bulky shutters will clash with the delicate style of your bedroom.
Add Extra Flair
Add an extra layer of elegance to your bedroom shutters and pair them with a set of breezy voile or net curtains. This creates a romantic effect and draws attention to your shutters.
Have we convinced you to invest in bedroom shutters? They provide the same benefits as blinds and curtains but have other advantages. And it’s clear that they score top marks for aesthetic appeal.
Next Steps
Once you’ve decided you want bedroom shutters, the next step to making your dreams a reality is to contact us. One of our sales consultants will meet with you to help you choose the right style of shutters for your bedroom.
Flyscreen Prices: The Cost of Insect-Proofing Your Home
Flyscreen prices depend on a few factors. Is it for a door or window? What’s the size of the opening? What type of application is it; rollerscreen, sash-type, hinged or sliding? Ordinary insect mesh or pet mesh?
Request a Flyscreen Quote
If you want to know how much an insect screen will cost, it’s best to contact us and request a quote. Provide us with the width and height of the opening and a few other details and we’ll work out a budgetary quote for you.
And then, if you decide to go ahead with an order, we’ll send one of our sales reps out to take the final measurements.
A Note About “Standard Sizes’
You might think your kitchen door or bathroom window is a ‘standard size’, but it’s not as simple as that. There are hundreds of combinations of various widths and lengths with windows. This article, from a German window manufacturer, provides an overview of window sizes.
And windows come in many styles: top-hung, side-hung, sliding or even sash-type. So we’ve developed flyscreen applications to accommodate the different windows.
There are fewer standard door sizes. And doors also come in different styles, such as hinged, sliding or stacking.
Measurements are most important, but there are other factors to consider.
What Factors Affect the Price of a Flyscreen?
Once we have the measurements and we know what style of window or door you have, we’ll need to know the following:
WHAT MATERIAL IS YOUR WINDOW OR DOOR?
Wood, steel and aluminium are the three most common materials used to make windows and doors. Why do we need to know this? It’s because some of our insect screens are better suited to certain types of windows. For example, our Sash-Type screens are best suited to steel-framed windows.
DO YOU HAVE BLINDS, BURGLAR BARS OR SECURITY GATES?
Our insect screens attach to your window or frame to create a seal. Without it, insects could slip through the gaps, defeating the purpose of the screen.
We can work around barriers such as burglar bars and security gates. That usually requires extra material to create a frame we can attach the screen to. Or, if you have blinds, we’ll charge you a fee for repositioning them.
WHAT ABOUT PLASTER OR TILES?
Plaster and tiles affect the measurements of your opening.
For example, the window in a bathroom or kitchen might only have tiles halfway up the recess. As a result, the width will be different at the top compared to the bottom of the opening. So, before we manufacture your screens, a sales rep will come out to measure each window.
DO YOU HAVE ENOUGH RECESS SPACE?
The ‘recess’ refers to the depth of space between the front of the wall and the window or door. Our screens form part of your existing openings but each application requires a certain amount of space.
For example, our Rollerscreen Flyscreens have a cassette or tube that holds the mesh when it’s rolled up. The cassette measures 45 mm in diameter, so the recess must be at least 45 mm deep to fit the tube. Of course, we can attach the screen to the wall in front of the window (called a face-fix). That requires more material and will increase the total cost.
STANDARD OR CUSTOM COLOUR?
All our screens have powder-coated aluminium frames. Match your insect screens to your window or door frames and they’ll be even less noticeable. The powder-coating finish also protects the aluminium frame and increases its durability.
Our standard powder-coating colours are white, cream, beige, bronze, charcoal or black. Other colours are available but come with a surcharge.
Insect Screen Applications & Costs
Keep in mind that our flyscreen prices are subject to change. The cost of materials, transport, and other factors fluctuate almost weekly. And remember that these prices do not include VAT or installation.
Sash-Type Flyscreens
A sash-type screen consists of two panels of mesh within an aluminium frame. One panel is stationary while the other moves up and down or left to right.
Sash-type insect screens are only suitable for windows and not doors.
Price Range: R600 – R1600 (excl. VAT & Installation)
Rollerscreen Flyscreens
Like a roller blind, the insect mesh in a Rolllerscreen Flyscreen rolls up into a tube. This application is suitable for both doors and windows.
R900 – R1 800 for a Rollscreen Window (excl. VAT & Installation)
R1 500 – R2 300 for a Rollscreen Door (excl. VAT & Installation)
Solid-Hinged Screens
Solid-hinged insect screens consist of an aluminium frame with mesh stretched across it. They attach to the window or door frame on a hinge. To access your window handle, you open the screen by pulling it towards you. Then, once the window is open, the screen shuts over the window. A magnetic lock keeps the screen in place.
Price Range:
R900 – R1900 for a Lightweight Solid-Hinged Window (excl. VAT & Installation)
R2200 – R4000 for a Lightweight Solid-Hinged Door(excl. VAT & Installation)
Solid-Slider Screen
Our sliding screens complement sliding doors and windows. You can install the screen inside or outside of the existing frame.
Price Range:
Solid Slider Window Screen: R1400 – R2600 (excl. VAT & Installation)
Solid Slider Door Screen: R1900 – R3200 (excl. VAT & Installation)
Flyscreens Are An Investment
A custom-made flyscreen is an investment. It’s made from quality materials and designed to form part of your existing windows. The screen is permanently attached and will last you a lifetime.
You don’t need to buy insect screens for all your windows at once. Let our consultants help you find a cost-effective way to insect-proof your home.
Remember, the flyscreen prices above do not include VAT or installation costs. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for a quote or if you have any questions about our flyscreens. We’re more than happy to discuss your requirements and provide you with an accurate quote.

Winter Decor with Vine & Co Interiors
Inspired by how shutters insulate your home, we turned to one of our favourite interior designers for her thoughts on creating a cosy abode. Rene Fourie from Vine & Co Interiors in Cape Town shares her tips for adding warmth to your home this winter.
Rene says, ‘Winter is one of my favourite seasons and the secret to transitioning your decor is incorporating colours and textures that characterise the season.’
** Many of the items featured here are available for purchase on Vine & Co Interior’s website
Layers of Comfort – Throws and Rugs
Woolly throws and blankets are a winter staple. Drape them over every surface, from the bedroom to the lounge, for an instant season update.
Carpets and rugs are another obvious technique for adding warmth to a space. Placing a runner in a tiled kitchen or down a passageway softens the look and feel of spaces that tend to be chilly.
Touchable Textures
Move the attention to your scatter cushions but swopping out summer textures (cool cottons and linens) for heavy winter textiles.
Bouclé (a heavy fabric made from looped yarns) is bang-on-trend right now. But velvet is the perfect alternative if you prefer smoother fabrics that still feel warm and indulgent. And Rene’s top tip is to combine ribbed cushions with a rich colour print for an opulent feel.
Nice & Natural
Colour plays an important role in winter decor but you don’t always have to go bold. Earthy, neutral shades do a great job of setting the mood and creating a restful atmosphere. Take inspiration from nature and pick up on the muted greens, browns and mustard yellows of the vegetation around you. Use these colours in accent pieces such as vases, artwork and other decorative objects to draw attention and create a mood.
Let It Glow
Good lighting is essential in winter when the sun sets earlier. And it can lift your mood so don’t be afraid to invest in beautiful table lamps. An eye-catching design makes it a piece of art in addition to being functional and a great floor lamp can add a touch of drama to a room.
Sweet Scents
Scent can be a powerful trigger for emotions and memories. Use this to your advantage in the colder months and fill your home with comforting fragrances such as vanilla, cinnamon or anything that evokes a feeling of warmth and comfort.
Winter Feels
Winter can be a challenging season for those who dread the cold, but with the right decor, your home can be a haven of warmth and comfort. As Rene has demonstrated, all it takes is a few tweaks to your decor to create a comforting space to see you through the season.
Bypass Shutters: The Floating Window Treatment
Bypass shutters are some of the most elegant shutters you’ll find. The way the crisp white panels float across an opening is captivating. With the ability to slide past each other and stack up on either side, they offer endless versatility.
What are Bypass Shutters?
They get their name from the way the panels pass each other by as they slide along their individual tracks.
Compare this to bifold shutters. Here, the panels fold up against each other and fold away from the opening. Visit our Shutter Speak blog to learn more about the different shutter configurations.
How do Bypass Shutters work?
It’s simple. Each shutter panel glides along its own track, mounted above the opening. If you have enough space on either side of the opening, you can extend the tracks. That way the so the shutter panels can slide right out of the way, giving you full access to the opening.
If you don’t have the space, keep in mind that there is likely to be at least one panel overlapping the opening at all times. If that doesn’t appeal to you, consider the bifold configuration.
The track can be mounted directly on the wall (face fix) or recessed within the opening (recess-fix).
But remember, a recess fix is only possible if there is enough room within the recess to house all the tracks.
Wood, Decorative Aluminium or Security?
You aren’t limited to a specific material or type of shutter if you want a bypass configuration. All our custom-made shutters can be configured as bypass shutters.
It’s even possible to keep the louvres open as you slide the panels past each other. As long as there is enough space between the tracks.
Where to install Bypass Shutters
Sliding shutters are a popular window treatment for large openings. Glass sliding patio doors are a perfect example of where this application works best.
But you can also install them to divide open spaces and create cosy nooks. Many modern homes have an open-plan layout to accommodate our modern lifestyles. But sometimes, you’d like the option to screen off an area.
In this case, we refer to them as privacy shutters. You can use them to create a study area in your bedroom or to separate your open-plan lounge and dining area.
Advantages of Bypass Shutters
Bypass shutters have three distinct advantages over bi-fold shutters:
This feature makes bypass shutters ideal for balconies and other small areas.
Most bi-fold shutters stick out at a 90° angle from the wall. But sliding shutters will always take up less room because they run parallel to the opening.
Shutters are the most durable window treatment on the market. But bypass shutters might be even more so. They have fewer moving parts so there’s less chance of something wearing out or breaking.
Once installed, your shutters will provide you with a lifetime of service and style. And they need hardly any maintenance.
Bypass shutters are less likely to sag under their own weight because they’re top-hung. This means they’re not subject to the same design limits as bi-fold shutters. And that means that the individual shutter panels can be a little taller and wider.
Sliding shutters have the usual benefits you get with any other shutters:
Sophisticated window treatment for a sliding door? A way to screen off a messy kitchen when you’re entertaining? Bypass shutters are the solution.
If there’s an area in your home that could benefit from bypass shutters, contact us today. Our sales reps will be happy to assist you with advice and a quote.
